Timeless

Geometric timelessness versus fluid volatility - all in one design. The striking red circle coat is one of the eye-catchers from the spring 1977 collection. Just like the work of geometric-abstract artists, whose work he admires and collects, Frans Molenaar's designs excel in refined simplicity.

Circles
with allure

Geometric timelessness versus fluid volatility – all in one design. This striking coat is one of the eye-catchers from the spring 1977 collection.
Frans Molenaar's creations could then be seen in the renowned gallery Nouvelles Images in The Hague - surrounded by work by geometric-abstract artists such as Ad Dekkers and Peter Struycken. The unique, as well as strategic, location gives Molenaar's collection a suitable artistic context.
The couturier finds this entourage self-evident. 'I like talking to visual artists. They understand proportions.' Molenaar rarely leaves anything to chance. Apparent details receive his critical attention as well.
Just like the work of these minimalists - whose work he admires and collects - Molenaar's designs excel in refined simplicity. The pattern of the circle coat is a characteristic example of this: two flat circles, placed on top of each other, with two armholes cut out. The coat closes with a zipper at the front. By folding the fabric forward and stitching it together vertically at the center of the back, he intensifies the allure.

The coat has been on display in 1987 at the large Frans Molenaar exhibition in the Hague Municipal Museum - now the Kunstmuseum Den Haag. Anny Brokx-van Bekhoven, then wife of State Secretary Gerrit Brokx, donated her coat to the museum. “My red circle coat has a timeless allure,” the satisfied owner explains in the catalogue.
